The mind is a powerful thing to waste

Yesterday I had an epiphany while working out.

It's a good thing there are tv's to watch while I'm on an elliptical machine.
I hopped on a machine and started my 30 minutes. I looked down at two and knew the time was going to go slow because at that point, it felt like I had been on for about 5 minutes at least. So I started watching tv and let myself go so I wouldn't concentrate on the task at hand (burning off that salad dressing at lunch) and it worked! I looked down and realized I had gone for 20, and at that point thought, heck, lets make it the full 45 minutes today. The first 20 was pie.

But I'll be damned that as soon as my mind realized I wasn't concentrating on the tv anymore, my workout was shot. I started breathing heavier, sweating more, and was just plain awkward on the machine for the rest of the time.

You can only trick your mind for so long apparently before it figures things out.

There is all sorts of things I do to keep myself entertained while working out. I prefer to listen to music while on the elliptical, but I have to watch tv while jogging on the treadmill - otherwise I start counting the minutes that are in each song (obviously I find running rather crappy) and drive myself crazy. It's such a fantastic feeling when the time flies like that.

even if im watching tv or listening to music, i am still VERY aware as to what the clock/counter reads. maybe i'll try a blindfold?
